SMART Recovery is a science-based program of recovery designed for individuals seeking abstinence from addiction. “SMART” stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training.
At SMART Recovery mutual-support groups, members learn to resolve their problems of addiction by utilizing a “4-Point Program” rooted in science and research:
Point 1: Building and Maintaining Motivation
Point 2: Coping with Urges
Point 3: Managing Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors
Point 4: Living a Balanced Life
SMART Recovery’s specific strategies for combating addiction are outlined in the SMART Recovery Handbook.
What is the difference between SMART Recovery and AA?
SMART Recovery is not AA. While Alcoholics Anonymous relies heavily on spirituality, SMART Recovery’s methodology is derived from scientific research on treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Whereas AA encourages members to admit “powerlessness,” SMART Recovery uses scientifically proven techniques to empower individuals over their addictions.
Success rates of SMART Recovery groups, however, are the same as those for groups of Alcoholics Anonymous. A recent scientific study found that, for individuals seeking to abstain from substance abuse, SMART Recovery can provide meaningful relief.
Is SMART Recovery for you?
People struggling with a variety of addictions may find help in SMART Recovery. Addictive behaviors addressed by SMART Recovery include alcohol abuse, marijuana abuse, gambling, eating disorders, misusing prescription drugs, sex addiction, smoking cigarettes, addiction to heroine or methamphetamines, and other compulsive behaviors.
SMART Recovery is welcoming to people who choose to continue using appropriately-prescribed medications and does not require that people stop taking prescription drugs before or after attending meetings.
What to expect at a meeting of SMART Recovery
Because SMART Recovery is based on scientific knowledge, SMART Recovery groups change and adapt as science evolves. In general, however, members attending a SMART Recovery meeting make use of “tools” in the SMART Recovery Toolbox. These include motivational enhancement therapy (“MET”), cognitive-behavioral therapy (“CBT”), and rational emotive behavior therapy (“REBT”).
Meetings are free for all attendants. You do not have to identify as an alcoholic or addict in order to attend a SMART Recovery meeting. To find a meeting in your area, click here.
